Haddad Beachfront

Back to Previous Page

The town had an opportunity to expand Menauhant Beach in 2003, but an agreement to buy 1.9 acres on the east side of the public beach fell through. The Haddad property became available again in the fall of 2006, giving the town another chance to own more public beach.

The town signed a purchase and sale agreement with the owner for $685,000, (The assessed value of the four lots was $984,300.) Because of the property’s value for recreation and as a coastal beach whose sands feed Menauhant Beach, The Falmouth Beach Committee and The 300 Committee worked together on a funding proposal to the Community Preservation Committee. The committee voted to recommend that town meeting approve $290,000 in CPA funds, with two other funding sources closing the gap: $110,000 from The 300 Committee and $300,000 from the town. The latter required that both town meeting and voters at large in the spring 2007 town election approve the purchase of this parcel. Both measures were passed and the town closed on the beachfront property in August of 2007.

The Community Preservation Committee added $5,000 to the funding request to help cover the costs of removing a dilapidated structure on the property. This building was razed in September of 2008.

Long before that structure was built, a guesthouse called The Captain’s House stood on the beach.
