Ice House Pond Frontage

Back to Previous Page

A tiny parcel on the shore of Ice House, or Miles, Pond in Sippewissett was one of the first town land purchases recommended by The 300 Committee in 1986.The value of the small lot is the public access it provides to the pond for fishing, canoes or small skiffs and swimming.

The stone remnants of an ice house used by Sam Cahoon for his popular fish market in Woods Hole can still be seen at the edge of the paved parking area. In 1933, according to The Book of Falmouth, he installed ice-making machinery. Neighbors didn’t like the noise it made and pointed out the land was zoned for residential, not industrial, use. Sam Cahoon’s supporters in Woods Hole were in favor of changing the zoning, but despite a large turnout at town meeting in his favor, the zoning initiative failed.

Access to the pond is on Sippewissett Road at the corner of McCallum Drive. A path leads down to the water. Although there is no beach, swimmers can reach the water down a stone embankment on McCallum Drive.
