Wing Pond Woods
The conservation land at Wing Pond in North Falmouth was part of the first omnibus open space package crafted by The 300 Committee for town meeting approval in 1986. The 19 acres at the southern end of the pond are girded by water: cranberry bog, stream, pond and herring run.
Trails established by youngsters in the 4-H Club circle the bog and lead past the herring run and into the woods, flanking the stream and the marsh headwaters of Old Silver Beach.
The property abuts land owned by Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuaries, Inc. Visitors can follow the trails that lead through the woods behind Bourne Farm and eventually reach the back section of the town-owned Cardoza Farm.
Access is from a dirt drive on North Falmouth Highway, south of Wing Pond Road, that serves several private homes and the Handy Cranberry Trust bogs. The train tracks cut through all of these properties — Cardoza Farms, Bourne Farm and Wing Pond — and once the Shining Sea Bikeway is extended along the railroad bed, access will be simpler.
